About Bahir Dar University

Bahir Dar University was formed by merging the Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute and Bahir Dar Teachers’ College. The Polytechnic, founded in 1963 with cooperation from the USSR and the Ethiopian government, was a leading institute for training technicians. The Teachers’ College, established in 1972 with support from the Ethiopian government, UNESCO, and UNDP, focused on training primary school educators and community development agents.

In 1999, the two institutions merged to create Bahir Dar University, officially inaugurated in 2000. Today, it is one of Ethiopia’s largest universities, with over 52,830 students enrolled in 219 programs, including undergraduate, master’s, and PhD courses. The university has five colleges, four institutes, two faculties, and one school, along with multiple research centers such as the Blue Nile Water Institute, Biotechnology Research Institute, and Energy Research Institute.

  • For women: Second degree score of 3.35 and above and first degree score of 2.75 and above
  • For people with disabilities: those who have a second degree score of 3.15 and above and a first degree score of 2.75 and above

• For developing region and pastoral area students: Second degree score of 3.15 or above and a first degree score of 2.50 or above.

To be hired as an assistant professor:

• PhD degree or equivalent or Medical Doctor (MD) and specialization certificate or equivalent
• Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and professional master’s degree or equivalent
• To be hired, they must have scored at least B+, Very good or equivalent in their second and third degree

To be hired as an associate professor:

• PhD degree or equivalent or Medical Doctor (MD) with a third degree (PhD)
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and also a third degree (PhD)
• Has been promoted to associate professor from a recognized higher education institution
• Minimum publication standards required by Bahir Dar University for associate professorship
• To be hired, they must have scored at least B+, Very good or equivalent in their second and third degree

To hire a full professor:

• PhD degree or equivalent or Medical Doctor (MD) with a third degree (PhD)
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and also a third degree (PhD)
• Must have been promoted to professor from a recognized institution of higher learning and met minimum publication standards required by Bahir Dar University for full professorship
• Note: MSc/MA or PhD degree holders will be given preference for posts with a third degree.
