Position Title: Health and Nutrition Specialist

Program/Department Summary:

The project focuses on improving the well-being and meeting the immediate needs of conflict and drought-affected and displaced populations in the Oromia region through integrated health, nutrition, and WASH responses.

General Position Summary:

The Health and Nutrition Specialist will lead the technical quality implementation and delivery of mobile health and nutrition services in the assigned woreda. Responsibilities include daily implementation of medical consultation and treatment, management of SAM cases, outreach EPI, health education, sanitation, maternal health services, and child health. The specialist will ensure adherence to existing guidelines, support health facilities assigned as integrated mobile health and nutrition modalities, and manage daily dispensary and drug supply. Documentation of services provided, weekly and monthly reporting, and collaboration with the health and nutrition coordinator are integral to the role.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Strategy & Vision
– Collaborate with team members for effective integration between other services like nutrition and health services.
– Harmonize efforts with local authorities and other partners for better impact and sustainability.
– Adapt to changing situations and contexts by learning and updating information or knowledge.

Program Management
– Provide basic health and nutrition services as per Somali RHB Mobile health and nutrition guidelines.
– Plan, implement, and monitor mobile health and nutrition activities in the assigned woreda.
– Coordinate and facilitate the implementation of mobile health and nutrition activities, site selection, and weekly movement plans.
– Facilitate essential drugs, supplies, and therapeutic products for the team and selected health facilities.
– Organize daily, weekly, and monthly overviews and reports on morbidity, mortality, EPI, health education, and consultations.
– Ensure the referral system and linkage between services and health facilities.
– Provide onsite training to HEW and nurses.
– Receive and cross-check weekly reports from HEW and submit to Woreda Project officers.
– Participate in capacity-building training, health education sessions, and BCC application.
– Follow up on absentees/defaulters and maintain current records of beneficiaries and staff.

Team Management
– Provide technical guidance for Midwifery and clinical nurse for standardized mobile health services.
– Offer technical support for Mercy Corps mobile and government health staff on comprehensive primary health care services.
– Collaborate with midwifery nurses, clinical nurses, and other nutrition teams for local capacity building activities.
– Provide formal and on-the-job training and supportive supervision for Mercy Corps woreda level staff and government health workers.

Influence & Representation
– Liaise with government authorities, ensuring understanding and agreement on program strategy, objectives, and activities.
– Participate in Zonal/Regional health and Nutrition Technical Working Group meetings.
– Coordinate with local stakeholders, report regularly, and provide updates on activities.
– Collaborate with potential partners on the field to improve program coverage and efficiency.

Security
– Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies.
– Proactively maintain a secure environment for team members.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge and Experience
– BSC in Public health or Nursing, with a minimum of four years working experience in NGOs, with two years in a clinical setup.
– Solid technical skills in case management of childhood and adult illness, safe motherhood.
– Knowledge and experience in managing medical complications of severely malnourished children and IMNCI/ICCM.
– Skills in program planning, implementation, and monitoring.
– Leadership ability for mobile teams and fostering team spirit.
– Strong computer skills (Microsoft), and interpersonal skills.
– Proficient in written and spoken English and local language.
– Good human relations skills.
– Willingness to work under pressure and extra hours.
