East African Community Students’ Mobility Scholarship Scheme (EAC-SMS) 2024 For East African Students

Description of Award:

The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is actively seeking applications from qualified individuals who are citizens of the East African Community (EAC) partner states for the inaugural cohort of undergraduate programs as part of the East Africa Community Student’s Mobility Scholarship Scheme (EAC-SMS). This scholarship initiative is made possible through the collaborative support of IUCEA-Member Universities, the IUCEA itself, as well as parents, guardians, and self-sponsorship.

Available Programs: The scholarship program provides opportunities for the following academic programs, organized by country, university, available slots, and intake periods.

Type of Award: This scholarship opportunity is for undergraduate students.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a citizen and resident of one of the EAC Partner states, including Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
  2. Should apply to study at a participating university located in a different East African partner state, not their country of origin or citizenship.
  3. Must meet the admission requirements for one of the available programs at a participating university in a different EAC country, not their own.
  4. Must be registered or eligible for registration in the selected university program.
  5. Will be required to pursue their studies in another EAC country, not their country of origin or citizenship.

Eligible Countries: The eligible countries for this scholarship include Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Number of Awards: A total of 59 undergraduate scholarships are available for various disciplines for the academic year 2023/2024.

Benefits of the Award: Responsibilities of the parties involved in the scholarship program are as follows:

A) IUCEA– Inter-University Council For East Africa

  • Provides medical insurance.
  • Offers transport facilitation by road when applicable at the beginning and end of the academic program.

B) Universities

  • Grants scholarships through tuition and examination fee waivers.
  • Provides admission and induction to scholarship awardees.
  • Appoints a contact person for liaison with IUCEA and Parents/guardians.
  • Monitors and provides regular progress reports on the performance of the scholarship program.

C) Parents / Guardians / Self / Sponsors

  • Cover accommodation and living expenses.
  • Cover other university fees (except tuition and examination fees provided in the scholarship).
  • Provide any other materials or information as required.

D) Students

  • Apply to the universities in the region that offer programs selected for the scholarship scheme.
  • Mobilize any additional resources to support their studies.
  • Provide information on their academic and social welfare to IUCEA, the university, and parents as needed.

Duration of Award: The duration of the scholarship will depend on the selected university program for the bachelor’s degree.

How to Apply:

The application process consists of two separate steps, and each step must be completed independently:

Step 1: Application for Admission to the University

  • Identify the program and university of your choice from the provided list of eligible programs.
  • Fill out the university’s application form and pay the required application fee.
  • Submit the completed university application form and supporting documents to the selected university, indicating your application for the IUCEA (EAC-SMS) Scholarship.

Notes:

  • Candidates can apply to more than one university but can only be offered one scholarship.
  • If applying for multiple programs, each program should have its application form and attachments.

Step 2: Application for the EAC-SMS Scholarship (IUCEA)

  • Register online for the scholarship through the provided link.
  • Download the Scholarship Application Form and submit it along with supporting documents in PDF format as one zip folder electronically to the email addresses: eacsms@iucea.org and exsec@iucea.org

Required Supporting Documents:

  • A letter of motivation for applying for the scholarship.
  • Updated and signed Curriculum Vitae.
  • Certified copies of all academic certificates and transcripts.
  • A copy of the university application form and its attachments (including proof of payment of application fees).
  • A recent color passport photograph capturing your full head and upper shoulders.
  • Evidence of nationality of a Partner State in the East African Community, such as a copy of a national identity card, passport, or birth certificate.
  • Additional certificates, awards, and prizes as evidence of participation in extracurricular activities.
  • Any other required evidence, such as medical reports, photos, and letters of reference.
